Introduction: It is particularly appropriate that The National Trust for Scotland should have assumed, on behalf of Glasgow City Council, the management of Pollok House, where it is believed inaugural discussions about the founding of the conservation charity took place in 1931. Sir John Stirling Maxwell, owner of the house at that time, was a founder member of the Trust. In 1939 Sir John concluded with the Trust its first conservation agreement, securing the Nether Pollok estate for ever ‘for the benefit of the citizens of Glasgow’.
