Important in depth study of Saxon chinoiserie lacquer and the work of Martin Schnell.
Court lacquerer to Augustus the Strong together with a study of the Berlin workshop of the Dagly brothers, based on the collection of lacquer furniture in Wilanów, the palace outside Warsaw, built in the late 17th century for King John III Sobieski, which became the Polish residence of Augustus the Strong in 1730. The author has identified the oriental sources used by Schnell for his lacquer work and the decorations he made on Böttger stoneware for the Meissen porcelain factory and has produced a concordance of 170 designs used by the Schnell workshop allowing attributions to be made for both lacquer furniture and Böttger wares.
