Animalia: Chinese Export Animal-Form Tureens catalogue, the first ever publication dedicated exclusively to the subject of zoomorphic tureens from the Qianlong period, mostly produced over a period of sixteen years, between 1759 and 1775.
It includes three introductory articles by William R. Sargent (The Allure of Chinese Export Porcelain Animal-Form Tureens: Artistry and Functionality), Patricia F. Ferguson (Fashioned after Nature: European Trompe l’oeil or Animal-Form Ceramic Tureens) and João Pedro Gomes (Between Orderand Adornment: The Tureen’s Function in 18th-century Aesthetic and Culinary Discourse), entries by our inhouse researcher Bruno Alexandre Morais on the fifty five examples discussed, and an illustrated list of one hundred and twenty eight typologies and decorative variations.
The catalogue presents new research and insights, providing an overview not only of these extraordinary tureens, some of the rarest and most spectacular ever made in China for export, but also of the historical context of the time.
Limited Edition of 400 copies.
