An innovative book, not only because it focuses on an artistic expression – the inlays – that was yet to be studied and systematized, but also because it links research in the subjects of art history, decorative arts and heritage studies with the science of conservation and restoration.
Combining several contributions from different perspectives, namely art history, garden art, conservation science, applied chemistry and even malacology, and taking the forgotten art of inlaying as the point of departure, this book analyses the complexity of Portuguese decorative arts, the high level of its landscape aesthetics, as well as other issues related to nature, technique and conservation.
Features 173 coloured images.
