The catalogue Made in China results from a pioneer exhibition on Chinese export fans from the Edrina Collection and The Fan Museum, that took place from the 5th September to the 31st December 2015.
Beginning with an enlightening introduction by Hélène Alexander, one of the founders and also director of The Fan Museum in Greenwich, the catalogue traces the European history of taste for Chinese fans, and describes the differences in materials, technique and form. The catalogue is divided into several chapters, each with a small introduction on the specific theme addressed, followed by images and details of the delicate fans and their corresponding study. Additionally, it includes a section with images of the various works of art loaned to the exhibition, illustrating the connections between the different branches of Chinese arts. The glossary of terms and the bibliography found at the end of the catalogue are also very useful for the comprehension of concepts of Chinese art, and for the furthering of knowledge, particularly of Europe’s trade with China.
