Cobalt Treasures: The Bell Collection of Chinese Blue and White Porcelain

Patricia F. Ferguson

The collection formed by Robert Murray Bell, Q.C. (1931-98) and his wife, Ann Walker Bell, documents the fascinating history of Chinese blue and white porcelain.

China's cobalt-blue painted porcelain has not only dominated ceramic manufacture in Asia, but also influenced and altered ceramic history throughout the world. With the installation of the Bell Collection near the display of porcelain from Meissen - the first European factory to successfully manufacture "true" or hard-paste porcelain - the Gardiner Museum is now more fully able to present the story of porcelain in Europe.
