The present catalogue results from an exhibition on Chinese blue and white ceramics, jointly organised by the Southeast Asian Ceramic Society and the National Museum of Singapore, held in 1978.
The book begins with an illustrated introduction on Chinese blue and white ceramics by the renowned scholars, S. T. Yeo and Jean Martin, followed by an article on Chinese maritime trade of ceramics by Grace Wong and a further article by Lu Yaw, on aspects of blue and white. The subsequent catalogue is organised chronologically, dating from the Yuan dynasty through to the early 20th century, and illustrates more than 400 pieces in 230 full colour plates, accompanied by accurate classifications and short descriptions. It ends with a very useful index of terms, clarifying those readers who are not so familiar with technical terminology, an index of decoration, elucidating all of those who want to learn more about the employment of certain motifs, and finally, a table of reign marks. This book is definitely one that any collector or lover of Chinese blue and white ceramics must have to fully understand this specific production, which lived through such a long period of time.
